A bat evening at Msinsi Reserve
The Bat Interest Group, under the guidance of Peter Taylor of the Durban Natural Science Museum, arrived at Msinsi Nature Reserve early one evening. Using bat detectors and state of the art sonogram recordings two bats species were identified from their characteristic vocalisations:
Little free tailed bat Chaerephon pumilus
Yellow House bat Scotophilus dinganii
Later in the evening two Wahlberg's epauletted fruit bats were caught in mist nests in the forest, a young female and a mature male. They were photographed, measured and weighed.
The Bat Interest Group hopes to be back soon to track down some rarer species such as the Pipistrellus, Otomops and Taphozous species. Watch this space for details of the next meeting at Msinsi.
